WWAMI is an enduring partnership between the University of Washington School of Medicine and the states of Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. The WWAMI name is derived from the first letter of each of the five cooperating states. About Us. The WWAMI Rural Health Research Center (RHRC) is one of seven rural health research centers funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP) to perform policy-oriented research on issues related to rural health care. WWAMI is a medical school program, not a premedical program. Students who enter the program are dual enrolled at the University of Idaho and the University of Washington School of Medicine and complete their Foundations Phase (18 months) of medical school.
The WWAMI Region Family Medicine Residency Network is a group of family medicine residency programs related to each other by geography and university affiliation. The Network consists of thirty-one affiliated residency programs located within the WWAMI region – Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.

In 1973, the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (WWAMI) medical school program was established and allocated just 20 slots for Montana students. WWAMI is the UW School of Medicine’s one-of-a-kind, multi-state medical education program. The acronym, WWAMI, stands for the states served by the UW School of Medicine: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. WWAMI is an acronym for the five states that participate in this program: W ashington, W yoming, A laska, M ontana and I daho. The UWSOM curriculum, content and testing is the same at all WWAMI sites. Students that complete this four-year medical education program receive their doctor of medicine degree (M.D.) from the UWSOM. WWAMI is a cooperative program with the University of Washington School of Medicine and the states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (the first letter of each state is where WWAMI gets its name).
